SUMMARY:Potassium Iodide (KI) Distribution
DESCRIPTION:Listen\n \n The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) will distribute potassium iodide (KI) tablets to Delaware residents living within a ten mile radius (also known as the Emergency Planning Zone or EPZ) of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. \nThe free tablets will be distributed on April 2\, 2026 between 11 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Middletown Fire Hall\, 27 W Green St\, Middletown\, DE 19709.  \nKI is available to residents who have received it previously and whose tablets have reached their expiration date\, as well as to those who never received tablets before. Individuals with home or business addresses within the EPZ are eligible to receive the KI tablets. Recipients must bring a photo ID such as a driver’s license\, proof of residency such as a utility bill\, or proof of employment within the EPZ when they go to the Middletown Fire Hall; such proof is all that is required in order to receive KI tablets. Residents who have KI that is expired can bring those tablets to the distribution center to exchange for new ones. \nKI does not protect against external radiation\, but can help protect the thyroid gland from ingested or inhaled radioactive iodine that might be released in a radiation emergency. KI is one of the protective measures outlined in Delaware’s emergency plans developed for use in a nuclear incident. The State of Delaware receives the tablets through a program initiated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). \nIn the event of a radiation emergency\, state and local officials will inform the public via an Emergency Alert System (EAS) message on local radio and television stations with instructions on how affected residents should react\, directions to evacuation routes and emergency reception centers\, and when to take the KI tablets if at all. \nDelaware residents living outside of the 10-mile EPZ who would like to obtain KI tablets should contact their pharmacist. KI is available over-the-counter at some local pharmacies. \nFor additional information regarding the potassium iodide distribution program in Delaware\, call the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) section at 302-659-3362.

SUMMARY:Emergency Sirens Test
DESCRIPTION:Listen\n \n The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and Delaware State Police will conduct a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system on Tuesday\, October 1\, 2024. The sirens will sound at 10:45 a.m. \nThe 37 sirens located within ten miles of the Salem/Hope Creek (New Jersey) plants will be activated for three to five minutes. The siren tests will be followed by a test message of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) on local radio stations. \nSirens that will be tested are the same sirens used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at either the Salem or Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. In such an emergency\, the public would be alerted by the sirens to tune their radios to one of the local EAS stations for important emergency instructions. \nAny residents living within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) may contact DEMA at (302) 659-3362 if they are in need of potassium iodide (KI) tablets. To check whether you live within the EPZ\, you can click here bit.ly/epz_delaware \nTo learn more about radiological preparedness\, check out PrepareDE.org \nThe Delaware Emergency Notification System (DENS) is the primary system for public warning and emergency protective action information in Delaware. The system allows local 911 centers or emergency managers to send messages to the specific street\, neighborhood\, or larger areas affected by the event. \nRegister for FREE today by clicking this link to DENS.
